在以前,人们在夏日里,只能到天然的河沟中去游泳。1892年,西人组织的游泳总会设立了第一个游泳池,以后游泳池就逐渐增多起来。在这些游泳池中,比较闻名的有游泳总会池、工部局的公共游泳池、虹口露天游泳池、西人青年会内的温水游泳池、几乎是当年远东独步的上海市游泳池以及私人经营的大都会游泳池、兰园游泳池、大陆游泳池。这些游泳池都有各自的特点。不过论起规模,高桥海滨浴场无疑无“池”可匹敌。当时可也很热闹一番,20世纪八九十年代一度再兴,终究时代不同,昙花一现。
