The optical constants of some sulfide phases were first determined with an interference coating metallographic microscope and used for quantitative metallography. The refractive index and the absorption coefficient of each phase were measured, and the condition that the metallographic structure exhibited the highest possible black and white contrast and a satisfactory color contrast was also pointed out. Reported the coating materials which allowed the light reflectance of several sulphide phases to nearly disappear and the results of the calibration of the individual phases according to the German industrial standard DIN 6164. When using coatings that do not absorb light, there is a simple mathematical relationship between the minimally reflective light reflectance and the refractive index of the coating for each phase, according to which a new method is proposed to accurately determine Coating refractive index values for various phases, including the amplitude conditions of the sulfide phase, are satisfied. Sulfides are a complex group of phases. Commonly used coating materials, ZnS or ZnSe, may not meet or exceed their amplitude conditions, and it is one of the purposes of this article to provide the necessary data.
