日本京都大学图书馆所藏《中国近代名人尺牍》裒集缪荃孙函札十八通。从函札辑录和物事关联性来考察,当是写给同一人的,即函札抬头所称“夫子大人函丈”。而这个“夫子大人”究竟是谁?据缪荃孙《艺风老人日记》和缪氏科考履历档案等材料,与缪氏函札往来频繁的有张之洞、潘祖荫、王先谦、杨蓉浦、李文田等。而从这些函札所涉及的内容和人物综合考察,“夫子大人”应该指潘祖荫。这些函札写于光绪三年到光绪九年之间。但这些信件在业经整理的缪氏著述均未见著录,无疑具有珍贵的文献价值:一方面,它可以补正缪氏、潘氏生平,因为这些函札写作时间早于《艺风老人日记》,记载了缪
