Morphological and quantitative studies of the response of guinea pig ocular surface LC to corneal inoculation of experimental HSV-1 (strain F) were performed. Four days after inoculation, the number of LC in the limbus and cornea was significantly increased. The corneal margins reached a peak value of 390 ± 94 / mm ~ 2 on the 6th day, which was 2.8 times that of the control group. The cornea peaked on the 8th day (366 ± 34 / mm ~ 2) and 60 times of the control group. On the 11th day after inoculation, the amount of LC in two sites started to decrease, but it remained higher than the normal level until 51d after inoculation. The implications of changes in local LC density in the immune response of the body and their relationship to keratitis development are discussed.
