当年孙燕生和姜万勐可能做梦也没想到,实验室里的数字视频成果之一 MPEG-1造就了中国VCD的辉煌,成就了新科、先科、爱多、步步高、厦新、金正等超级影碟机企业。可惜的是,VCD在数字视频格式上的先天不足始终没有登上国际市场的大雅之堂,VCD过剩的生产能力只能在国内市场消化,大家斗得筋疲力尽,而被称为20世纪末的最后一朵玫瑰的DVD给了中国企业一个机会。DVD一开始就是一个统一的国际标准,芯片技术仍然掌握在美国人手中,从某种意义上说,生产能力最强的日本企业和中国企业重新站在了同一条起跑线上,随着中国加入WTO,技术上的壁垒逐渐消除,在国内市场上已经与国外兵团较量过的中国VCD企业,开始把目光描向更广阔的国际市场,中国企业在VCD上多年的耕耘,应该是在DVD上有所收获的季节了,这也应该是国产DVD明天的一个方向。国外的媒体已经注意到这一动向。欧洲最大的影音技术杂志《Home Cinema Choice》在1999年12月号登出这篇文章,杂志的主要编辑Bob Tomalski在香港购得一台新科的DVD-8320,经试用后撰此文进行了介绍。文中一些观点颇有启发性,编辑部特地选登该篇文章,供读者和业界参考。
