The loss of low-loss multimode fiber consists of Rayleigh scattering loss and micro-bending loss. These losses are related to the fiber’s structural parameters. On the other hand, the optical power coupled from the light source and the optical fiber connection loss are also related to these parameters. This article considers the combination of LED’s as a light source and a gradient fiber as the transmission line and discusses the best parameters that will yield the longest allowable span between an optical transmitter and a receiver.
