一轮红日吊在浩瀚的海洋上空。一辆旧式的黑色小汽车在沿海公路上驰骋,它穿过林中路,又在田原路上迅跑……驾驶这辆小汽车的,是个矜持端庄的女人,名叫玛乔莉。她本来住在纽约,丈夫是一个新闻记者,自己一直在练习写小说。前不久,主编麦克斯拒绝出版她的短篇小说,她决定到刚买下的这个桔子园来另写一部,丈夫不肯随便就离开城市,于是她就独自带着打字机到十字小溪来了。玛乔莉驾驶的破旧的小汽车刚刚驰进一个小镇就突然坏了。她走下车来,急着打听出租汽车的地方。一个老人指着一家旅馆,说:“你去找诺顿·巴斯金,他会帮助你的。”玛乔莉走进那家旅馆,找到了巴斯金。
