The etiology of essential hypertension is poorly understood. Although some of the severe renal impairment observed in malignant hypertension may cause an increase in blood pressure, it is generally agreed that renal arteriosclerosis is not responsible for the initial increase in blood pressure. It has been suggested that changes in renal function interfere with the renal blood supply and / or affect the excretion of sodium, or stimulate the renin-angiotensin system to cause hypertension. Our results do not support the etiologic role of primary renal dysfunction in essential hypertension. 171 patients with essential hypertension and 61 normal subjects were studied
