第一次战役(1950年10月25日-11月7日)中国在1950年7月组建了东北边防军,包含38、39、40、42等4个军,这些部队都是第四野战军的主力部队,在国内解放战争中久经考验。10月19日,志愿军的首批部队40军在夜色掩护下,跨过鸭绿江,秘密进入了朝鲜。1950年10月25日,40军在云山以北及温井附近与韩军第6师发生接触,击退和全歼韩军各一个营。此后4天,40军又在温井附近地区歼灭韩军第6师大部和第8师2个营,值得一提的是其中韩军第6师第7团系从鸭绿江边楚山镇折返,联合国军开始尝到分兵冒进的苦果。
