Shallow and moderately inhomogeneous geologic bodies, such as salt domes, can mask deep layers seriously, even when they exhibit only flat shapes. A long offset allows the ray path to completely exceed or under the inhomogeneities and may provide the desired information. This technology, which has been used on land for several years and is known as “exploration below”, has now been extended to offshore seismic work. Use two boats. Redundant information can be used to solve the navigation problem. In particular, the distance between the blasting vessel and the receiving vessel can be successfully controlled with a water-cut signal. Connect the lower gun line to the previous test net with a small streamer on the exploding boat. Records are of good quality and fill the gaps left by general exploration on the salt dome.
