The Lawrence Berkeley Institute recently developed a new technology that gives high-resolution microscopy of living cells. This technique uses high-energy ion beams of neon or argon to carve the specimen morphology on a mica plate, known as heavy ion microscopy. The application of heavy ions to microscopes attracted attention two decades ago. In theory, the resolution of a microscope is proportional to the wavelength of the radiation (light, electrons, etc.) used, and the massier particles have shorter wavelengths and higher resolution. However, heavy ions are more difficultly linked and have not been used in microscopy so far. Heavy ion microscopy replication technology
