Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a catecholamine-based enzyme that regulates dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels. At present, studies have confirmed that the COMT gene mutation is related to the pain of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Psychological factors such as interpersonal conflict, stress and depression are related to the occurrence, severity and long-term of pain. Given the importance of depressive symptoms in the regulation of chronic pain, the interaction between the COMT gene in large sample populations and the depressive symptoms associated with TMD pain was analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS All subjects were white in rural northeastern Germany, of whom 29.9% of 3 904 subjects had lifelong
