A colorectal cancer xenograft in nude mice was used as an animal model to observe the inhibitory effect of the intact peptidoglycan from bifidobacterium bifidum on the growth of colorectal carcinoma, and its antitumor mechanism was discussed in terms of cell proliferation activity. The results showed that the growth rate, mean tumor weight, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) positive cell density of the transplanted colon cancer in the intact peptidoglycan group were significantly lower than those in the tumor control group (P<0.01). The complete peptidoglycan of bifidobacterium bifidum in vivo can obviously inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer. One of its anti-tumor mechanisms is to reduce the proliferation activity of tumor cells.
