The prostate gland occurs in the urogenital sinusoidal epithelium and is an androgen-dependent organ. Androgens and their receptors play an important role in the occurrence, growth, differentiation and maintenance of function of the prostate. Androgens (T) are mainly synthesized and secreted by Leydig cells and can be converted into more biologically active dehydrotestosterone (DHT) by the action of 5α reductase (mainly type II).
