Longhuai is a small basin closed off by towering mountains in Lipu County, Guangxi Autonomous Region in southwestern China. The natural conditions there are so poor that only about 10 families have lived there in the last 100 years. Corns are their only staple food. It is said that no one wedding ever took place in the village in the past 18 years and no child was born there in the past 20 years. A highway bypasses Longhuai only a few kilometers away, but the village is hemmed in by its seemingly insurmountable mountains.
