Ottawa, Canada: Botulinum toxin can correct spasmodic torticollis for short periods of time without serious side effects, according to neurologists at the University of British Columbia (UBC). For the past four years, researchers Joseph Tsui and Donald Calne have found that such acetylcholine inhibitors can relieve 90% of the more than 200 patients treated. Treatment is to inject 500 to 700 rat toxins into the affected muscles. It has been shown that one side of the sternocleidomastoid and the other side of the trapezius and head muscle are the most commonly used target organs. Although patients need repeated injections, with an average of 15 injections per week, the additional dose increases the patient’s perception.
