一九八五年十二月，以国家地震局副局长丁国瑜为首的代表团，一行20人赴美参加“中美地震预报讨论会”。这次讨论会是在美国AGU秋冬大会之中召开的，因此，其内容和范围大大超过了双边的会义。AGU是美国地球物理联合的简称，它包括行星、大气、海洋、地质、地震学、地壳、、地慢、地核等学笠。这次AGU大会共收到文章摘要1800余篇，约有4000余人参加了大会，其中地震学方面的文章约350篇。有关地震预报的约75篇。
