In 1987, American Psycho, a novel published by American writer Bret Easton Ellis, became bestseller in North America. The novel nuancedly portrays the life of the Yuppies on Wall Street in the 1980s (the Reagan era), revealing the empty boring inner world of a new generation of middle-class New York. By Patrick Bateman, a bi-headed “Doctor Who” figure, the author suggests that in many situations a person’s appearance is completely different from what is inside. In 2000, the director Mary Harron adapted the novel into a movie that has been successful in both art and box office. She sees the movie as a “fable.” She said, “In real life, Bateman can never escape legal punishment, but that’s exactly where fiction and cinema mean.No one suspects Bateman is a killer because of his sanctimonious appearance and the society in which he lives The environment is so harmonious and perfect. ”“ The film’s performance against violence is indirect. With Bateman immersed in the dark desire can not extricate themselves, he gradually out of touch with reality. ”The last third of the movie has become more surreal so we are not sure what the reality on screen is and what Bateman’s fantasy is.“ ”Regarding the style of the movie, Mary Harron thinks she is Honoring Hitchcock and Kubrick.
