Objective: To investigate the relationship between five trace elements levels in infants and children fingerprints and body weight, and to provide a scientific basis for better prevention and treatment of obesity in infants and children. Methods: From October 2009 to April 2011, 644 healthy infants and young children from a pediatric clinic in Wuchang district were tested for body weight and finger blood levels of 5 trace elements. Results: The lower the age of the children was, the higher the detection rate of obesity and overweight. There was no significant difference in body weight between the children aged 0 ~ 6 months and the normal group (P> 0.05) The Z score of infants in zinc deficient group was lower than that of zinc normal group (P <0.05). Conclusion: Zinc deficiency affects weight gain in infants and young children. There is also a lack of trace elements in infants and young children with simple obesity. Trace elements levels should be tested to prevent metabolic disorders in time.
