A Norwegian geophysicist has proposed a coral reef formation theory that helps oil and gas exploration. The theory holds that many coral reefs and carbonate moons are formed on the seabed and rely on the nutrient-rich liquid exuded from the seabed. Martin Hoffland, a senior geophysicist working for Statoil (Norwegian National Oil Company), also attempted to explain why the theory was established when a large number of living coral reefs were found in the deeper cold outside the Norwegian Sea shelf .
