蟋蟀在古书中写作“蛩”,是一种很像蝗虫而个体略小的昆虫,在各地有不同的叫法,常见的有蚰蛐、促织,上海周边地区则叫作“sai jie”,这只是一个方言读音,所以又有不同的写法,如上世纪30年代出版的《沪谚》收录的上海谚语有“口是风,笔是踪,(?)(?)无毛难过冬”(作者注:“(?)(?),音暂即,蟋蟀也。)又有些书中把它写作“嫌绩”、“赚蝍”等。
