最近在几种报刊文摘上看到老舍先生曾为爱新觉罗·溥仪写的《我的前半生》一书润色、修改的报道。例如,1984年3月2日的《文摘报》第7版有一则消息说: “溥仪给人留下一本传记《我的前半生》,这本书文字流畅,北京味很浓。现在知道《我的前半生》是经过大手笔润色、修改而成的。这位大手笔就是著名作家老舍先生。楼适夷的《忆老舍》一文说,有一次他问老舍近来写些什么,老舍道:‘什么也没写,正在当”奴才“呀,替我们”皇帝“润色稿子哩!’这部稿子就是后来出版的《我的前半生》。”
