The Middle East is one of the six largest service markets in the world with an annual import volume of around 350-400 million, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the total number of floating service workers in the world. The Gulf War has brought great changes to the labor market in the Middle East. After Iraq invaded Kuwait, more than 1.5 million foreign workers, including our workers, withdrew from Kuwait and Iraq. Other Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Yemen also stopped attracting foreign workers. Now that the post-war Kuwaiti towns and cities have been dilapidated and ruined, more than 500 of the 940 oil wells have caught fire in the war, and the fighting to extinguish these wells will take at least a year and a half.
