重视阶基是中国建筑外部轮廓的重要特征之一,与之相应的另一重要特征则是庞大的屋顶。二者一以法天,一以法地,有“上有天顶下有地基”之称,加上中间住人,是“天、地、人”三才在中国建筑上的具体象征。大屋顶的习俗随着时代的发展,一直保存到了二十世纪,而对阶基的重视却自从东汉之后便日趋于扁平,仅成一文弱之衬托,非若当年之台榭,居高临下,有雄视山河的态势。到了唐代以后,阶基更是成了一象征性的部件,反倒是日本保存下来不少高阶基的建筑实体。梁思成:《中国建筑史》
