1945年11月,一个英国人闯进了阿赫玛托娃的生活。这一年秋天,英国政府委派以赛亚·伯林担任驻苏联大使馆的临时一秘的职务。伯林出生于当时属于苏联加盟共和国之一的拉脱维亚的一个犹太人家庭,后随父母迁居彼得堡。十月革命后,全家流亡英国,伯林就读于牛津大学。
In November 1945 an Englishman broke into Akhmatova's life. This fall, the British government appointed Isaiah Berlin to the position of Temporary Secretary of the Embassy in the Soviet Union. Berlin was born in a Jewish family in Latvia, then belonging to one of the Soviet republics, and moved to Petersburg with his parents. After the October Revolution, the whole family was exiled to Britain and Berlin attended Oxford University.
