Jia Pingwa holds that western literature has a great realm. Western literature focuses on analyzing human nature and Western literature adopts a focus on perspectives. On this basis, he believes that Chinese literature, Chinese writers should learn from the realm of Western literature, but also adhere to the national art form. Jia Ping-wa’s above-mentioned views on Western literature have led him to work out of the narrow circle of writing touching stories in the “mountain notes” era and gradually focus on the broad realm of human existence and human destiny. Since his creation of “Three States in Shangzhou”, his novels have been thinking about a series of important issues that mankind is facing together, such as the relationship between tradition and modernity, nature and civilization, and between villages and cities. Since the mid-1980s, the theme of Jia Pingwa’s novels has shifted from focusing on the age to focusing on the manifestation of complex and multifaceted human nature. When Jia Pingwa shows these world themes, they use the national form.
