竞争模拟起源于军事领域的战争模拟。由于战争的巨大破坏力,人们希冀不动真刀真枪,即可预知交战结果,然而,这只是一个梦想。人类几乎用尽一切所能想到的方法来实现这个梦想,从祭祀、占卜、妙算,到各种布阵、操练、演习,应有尽有。当人类从迷信的茫然中顿悟之后,便开始依靠自身的智慧对战争进行模拟。由于军事领域的战争与商业领域的竞争具有很大的相似性,所以军事领域里的许多工具、方法被引入商业领域,并取得了显著的效果。1957年,美国管理协会受到军事战争模拟的启发,开发了一套用于商业竞争的“高级管理决策模拟”游戏,让企业在模拟的情境中对某一产品的产量做出决策,此举首开商业竞争模拟先河,拉开了商业竞争模拟的序幕。
