曹立庵是我国现代著名的书画篆刻艺术家,其书法、篆刻、国画,可谓功力深厚,独树一帜。其书艺特点是雄浑劲健,结体开张,颇有大将风度。有诗句评价他为“江山满眼真如画,丹青君更追曹霸”(柳亚子句)。其书法广泛涉猎了历代各种碑帖,后又师法伊秉绶、何绍基等人的隶书,从中吸取了丰富的营养。同时与其同时代诸名家的交往、广博的学识,且热心于推广传播文化艺术事业(创立了黄鹤楼书画社,筹建东湖印社)都促成他成为一代艺术大家。
