Pipa came into China from the Western Regions when it was a five-stringed instrument. From the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, the pipa moved in parallel with the four-stringed pipa. In the Northern Song Dynasty, it was basically replaced by the four-string pipa and has been lost for more than a thousand years. There are seven pianos lined up on the stage, each one different and each one has an extraordinary history. Like the 18th-largest weapon in the hands of the ancient generals, Fang Jinlong’s eighteen musical instruments are worthy of being put down to make this “Pipa’s Past and Present” music on December 10 at the Shanghai Concert Hall meeting.
