The study of Chinese urban history in the pre-Qin period (founded by the Qin Empire from 221 BC to 221 BC) relied heavily on archaeological excavations. Kwang-Chih Chang's authoritative works on the archeology of the Pre-Qin period make an overview of the studies of Shang and Zhou cities from the perspective of archeology. Although there are some records of the cities in the Xia Dynasty in the relevant historical data, the final determination of them remains to be further confirmed from the perspective of archeology. The existing archaeological findings show that the earliest cities in China started in Shang Dynasty. Shang Dynasty settlement sites discovered in Yanshi, Zhengzhou, Anyang and other places illustrate the prosperous urban context
