嘉善县地处江浙沪两省一市边缘,属浙江省嘉兴市管辖.北部与上海市金山、青浦、江苏省吴江等市县相连,南部与平湖市、嘉兴市相接.嘉善方言是现代吴语的一种次方言,属浙北吴语区,与苏沪吴语较为接近.嘉善县境内各乡镇之间,语音基本一致,但也有若干为本地人听得出来的零星差异;此外,在老年人和青年人之间,也存在着一些语音差异.到目前为止,还没有见过用嘉善方言写作的书报和描写、研究嘉善方言的专著,所以,它是一种尚未得到充分研究的、待开发的方言.嘉善县的县城所在地是魏塘镇,魏塘镇城中地区的发音是嘉善方言的标准音.本文所记是魏塘镇城中的语音.
