通常瞬时强度I_i(t)表示如下: I_i(t)=p(t)v(t) 式中p(t)和v(t)分别为瞬时声压和质点速度。平均强度I(t)则是对I_i(t)进行时间平均的结果。从瞬时强度中可以看出强度随时间的变化,但它不适于进行定量评价。而时间平均强度虽可进行定量评价,但又丢失了时间信息。所以又引入了介于瞬时强度和平均强度之间、具有中间性质的包迹强度I_e(t):
