根据中国科学院知识创新工程试点工作的总体部署,2001年,中国科学院原合肥分院与等离子体物理研究所、安徽光学精密机械研究所等四个研究所整合成立了中国科学院合肥物质科学研究院,整体进入中国科学院知识创新二期工程。其时,整个科研基地(又称“科学岛”)的资产总额达到8亿元,其中固定资产4.6亿元。四个研究所共有科研课题约700个,年资金流入量约2.8亿元,此外还有园区建设项目
