It is hard to integrate the past experiences of Southeast Asia into a single volume because of the ethnic,linguistic,religious and cultural diversity of the region.That partially explains why no comprehensive monographs on the ancient history of Southeast Asia had been published in mainland China before the publication of A History of Ancient Southeast Asia in 2013,which covers the history of Southeast Asia from prehistoric times to the early 16t~ century AD.The three editors of this book are leading scholars of Southeast Asian studies from Peking University,and the other contributors are also specialists in this field.The book fills a gap in Southeast Asian studies in mainland China and has been well appreciated by Chinese academics.Recognized by the peers,the book has been selected into the "National Achievements Library of Philosophy and Social Sciences 2012 of China",which funded its first publication.
