2018年秋,一部全亚裔阵容的好莱坞电影《摘金奇缘》(Crazy Rich Asians,直译为“疯狂的亚洲富豪”)在美国掀起狂潮,并在年末引入中国市场。此片改编自新加坡华裔作家关凯文(Kevin Kwan)同名小说,原小说共三部,除《摘金奇缘》外,还有《中国富豪女友》(China Rich Girlfriend)和《富人问题一箩筐》(Rich People Problems),皆围绕有钱的华人展开。
关凯文出身于新加坡豪富之家,书中对于富人生活的描写虽令常人咂舌,却多有真实佐证,为增加故事“可信度”,小说每章后更是详加注释。相比之下,也许是由于电影主创不够“富有”,虽然故事情节基本相同,对于“豪富”的展现却远远不够;贯穿电影的,除了“灰姑娘嫁王子”的老戏码,就是浅尝辄止的中西家庭观的冲撞与和解。若要感受“豪富”与“疯狂”,还得去读小说。
小说火爆,各路读者各取所需:有读出对“疯狂”的种种剖析,有讀出对“金钱”的既爱又恨,有读出东西文化的碰撞,更有真富或装富的人们手捧此书,到各大奢侈品店去按图索骥。作者称自己的小说是“社会讽刺之作”(social satire),不过,与《名利场》(Vanity Fair)之类的经典“讽刺”作品相比,此作明显“锐利”不足,反倒是“金钱”味道极重。
不得不说,金钱让华人的地位显著提升;如今有钱的华人,早已不满足于横扫欧美各大奢侈品店;甚至,手臂一挥,豪气地把洋人的整个酒店买下,也不是什么稀罕事。
在伦敦,以梁幸(Felicity Leong)为首的一群华裔,在某高档酒店受到酒店经理的无礼对待,梁幸欲与之辩驳,反被揶揄:“Ormsby was indignant. How dare this Chinese woman with the Thatcheresque perm and preposterous ‘English’ accent speak to him in such a manner? ”(奥姆斯比经理很生气。这个留着撒切尔夫人式波浪发、一口可笑的“英式”英语的中国女人,竟敢这样跟他说话。)经理毫不客气地“请”这些人移步“唐人街”。“She hadn’t seen this particular brand of superior sneer since she was a child growing up in the waning days of colonial Singapore, and she thought this kind of overt racism had ceased to exist.”(梁幸幼年时正值新加坡最后的殖民地岁月,之后便再没受过这等轻视,她本以为这种公然的种族歧视早已不存在了。)也罢,当得体的衣着和高贵的口音都无法打动愚昧的洋人时,就只有金钱这一招了……几分钟之后,接管了这家酒店的梁幸,对目瞪口呆的经理说,“Oh yes, I almost forgot. I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave the premises.”(啊,对了,我差点忘了。恐怕我要请您离开我家的地盘儿了。)
整个世界必须接受一个事实——华人真是“越来越有钱”了。
梁美惠(Astrid Leong),一位拥有“无限大”衣橱的美女,一年四季乘坐私人飞机从巴黎、米兰大手大脚购入各式绚丽新装,无知的洋女人们以为她定是哪位白人老板包养的“情妇”,殊不知梁氏家财实在已经到了花费不尽的程度:“Twice a year, when the family sat down with their business managers at Leong Holdings, she would notice that her personal accounts always increased in value, sometimes to an absurd degree, no matter how many couture dresses she had splurged on the previous season.”(一年两次,梁家人与梁氏控股的商业经理们会面时,她总会发现,自己的个人账户又升值了,有时简直升值到荒谬的程度,无论她上一季在时装上挥霍了多少钱。)
不过,梁家并不是小说的主角。在有钱的华人中,另有一批是深藏不露的,后者,据关凯文称,才是他要在书中“歌颂”的:“It was also my goal to show the rest of the world an aspect of Asia that isn’t limited to what we read about in gossip magazines—that isn’t just about people dropping millions on weddings or Hermès bags. I wanted to depict the society that I knew well, or of educated families with style and taste that have been quietly going about their lives for generations.”(我另有个目的,就是要把亚洲的另一面展现给世界看,那不是局限在我们八卦杂志上的东西——不是那些动辄把几百万花在婚礼和爱马仕包上的人们。我要展现那个我熟悉的群体,他们有格调和品位,受过良好教育,世代安静地生活。)小说中的杨家,便是这样的家族——怪不得男主角杨尼克(Nick Young)与女友朱瑞秋(Rachel Chu)交往许久,女友却对他的显赫家世一无所知呢。像尼克母亲那种穿着、举止、行事低调得体的大富之家的掌权者,积累家族财富才是根本之道,而花费财富倒不是她们应该关注的事了。不过,这样的“贤德”人家,也自有其“疯狂”之处——全以守财、聚财为使命,事事衡量利弊,皆由钱财的损益为标准。显然,财富才是此类家庭真正的掌权者。杨太太之所以使出浑身解数,要击退那个她并不认可的未来儿媳,皆因为她看到对方的家世、身份、性格等方面,对于杨家的财富没有丝毫益处。电影结尾的“和解”,在小说中并没有发生;直到第二部《中国富豪女友》中,得知瑞秋的生父其实是更大的富豪,杨太太这才爽快地“批准”了这门婚事。
