“五一”期间,中央电视台新闻频道播出了电视历史系列片《幼童》,在第四集论及中国早期留学生在回国后发挥重要作用时,专门提到了后来在北洋水师中担任军官的一系列清朝海军留学生,并且展示了许多留美幼童长大以后的照片。然而令人遗憾的是,当电视片解说者提到在110年前甲午海战中第一个阵亡的北洋水师中军左营都司帮带兼“济远号”铁甲舰大副沈寿昌时,却以斩钉截铁的口吻断言:“沈寿昌没有给我们留下任何照片。” 然而这个结论未免下得过于轻率。历史的事实与此断言恰恰相反:沈寿昌不仅给后人留下了照片,而且这张照片经英国一家以图片为主、发行量极高的刊物转载之后,甚至全球流传极广。 这张照片是我在英国发现的。2003年上半年,我作为访问教授在英国西部的布里斯托尔大学讲学和进行学术研究,在那儿的图书馆中找到了一万多张反映清末民初中国的图片和老照片,有不少是反映甲午战争的。其中就包括了留美幼童沈寿昌成人后的照片。
