张謇(1853-1926),字季直,江苏海门人。晚清甲午(1894)状元,授翰林院修撰;清末朝廷授其农工商大臣兼东南宣慰使,因其赞成共和而峻辞;民初曾任孙中山南京临时政府实业总长;袁世凯任大总统时,先辞组阁之邀,继就农商总长、水利局总裁、全国教育会长等职。张謇是中国近代史上著名的实业家、教育家,社会改革家、政治活动家,亦是诗文、书法名家。而今学界认定其对中国近代社会的催生与构建产生巨大影响,从而成为近代史研究

Zhang Jian is a famous industrialist, educator, social reformer and political activist in modern Chinese history. He is also a famous poetic and calligrapher. Now academics have determined that it has a huge impact on the birth and construction of modern Chinese society, and thus become a modern history research
