The dynamic studies on the amount of dead wood, the stock of dead wood (CWD), their decomposition rate and their nutrient cycling in ecosystem of Pinus koraiensis-Coniferous-Broad-leaved Mixed Forest in Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve and the steppe CWDs are important components of temperate natural forest ecosystems. Their importance in ecosystem functioning varies with forest types. CWDs are more important in coniferous forests than coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests. An important role of CWD in the ecosystem nutrient cycle is likely to be that the system plays a role of storing nutrients and increasing the stability of the system after being subjected to major external disturbances. The future global forest litter C stock assessment should include the CWD, otherwise it will underestimate the global forest litter C storage of 2.0-16 × 10 ~ (13) kg, the relative error of the system of 2-10%.
