1948年冬,辽沈战役结束,淮海战役展开。华北“剿共”总司令傅作义的60万军队分布在东起北宁线滦县,西至平绥(京张)线柴沟堡,约600多公里的狭长地带。11月底,我华北野战军杨成武三兵团包围张家口,傅作义派他的王牌、全部美式机械化部队三十五军2万余人去增援。不久,他得知我东北野战军进关,先头部队已达延庆地区,又下令三十五军速返北平。
