The U.S. National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) produced two coastal buoy prototypes with a diameter of 2.3 meters. Although the water features of both buoys are functionally identical, there is a substantial difference between the underwater parts. The first buoy uses a self-supporting counterweight ring construction, with a restraining movement of the pendulum suspension tether, allowing unlimited pitch angle and 40 ° rotation. The second buoy uses the traditional center-tube balance weight design. Stability tests showed that both buoys exceeded the stability requirements. Pilot trials are currently under way to estimate the economic benefits of both designs for the chosen business environment. This article describes its stability and the results of early field trials.
