In 1934, the American Railway Association (AAR) was established to ensure coordination and cooperation between independent private railways operating in North America. The American Railroad Association has, for the present and in the past, been headed by a board of directors composed of the chairman of each railroad. Each member contributes collectively as a fund of the association, out of which the shares are proportionate to their total income. It is an international organization that absorbs both the United States and its members as railroad companies in Canada and Mexico.
