To date, silk has been sterilized by the Kaehs method in many surgical departments. However, this method is relatively expensive and has the disadvantage that it is too cumbersome to prepare the yarn and takes a long time, and therefore does not have the potential of being widely used. During the great Patriotic war, we changed the disinfection of silk threads to autoclaving. Sterilizing at 1.5 atmospheres for one hour or half an hour, with great promise for this method, did not result in any solidified silk. It was not until the beginning of 1951 that we decided to experiment with sterilizing the silk thread in an autoclave in a shorter period of time, say, 5 minutes.
