马若瑟所著《汉语札记》对“以”字的研究体现出明显的语法化和词汇化意识。马若瑟不仅依据是否做句子基本成分来划分实词和虚词,还点明了隐喻这条语法化路径,并举出一些虚化例证,在衔接中国传统实词虚化思想与现代语法化思想方面具有重要的里程碑式的意义。其对“所以”“以为”等的研究呈现出由分开的两个词到一个凝固词语转化的过程,表现出超前的词汇化意识,这在汉语语言学史和欧洲汉学史上都具有重要的意义和价值。
