抗战爆发后,浙赣铁路一度取代长江成为华南的东西交通干线该路在输送兵员军需、抢运民众物资、维持沿线及大后方的生存与发展等方面均发挥了重要作用但战火的摧残、铁路器材的稀缺以及各类运输的不平衡等客观因素给铁路运输造成了种种困难,军运、客运、货运、营业收支等方面因此深受影响,铁路的运输能力遭到了严重削弱,从而制约了铁路对抗战及社会经济的推动作用
