Every year, millions of Chinese tourists travel to Europe every year, but few Chinese were traveling that far 400 years ago. Enpu, a Chinese businessman, is a rare exception. He flew to Holland in 1600 on a Dutch merchant ship. Recently discovered a friend’s book of 17th-century Dutch lawyer Nikolai de Vries, with a portrait of Enpu and the small Chinese characters left by him. This article deciphers the Chinese puzzle and briefly discusses the key role Enpu played as a consultant to Dutch East India Company.
