In the 19th century, missionaries in China actively introduced classical knowledge about ancient Greece and Rome in order to change Chinese prejudices against the West. Using journals, newspapers, study reports and historiography, they described to the late Qing China a classical world comparable to that of the Chinese civilization. This world is not only prosperous for its rule of law, its exploits are outstanding, but also passed down from generation to generation, making it one of the origins of European civilization in modern times. The translation and introduction of Western classical science by missionaries in China affected to a certain extent the arrogance of Chinese scholars in the late Qing dynasty and pushed them to the path of understanding and learning from the West.
