[Decrease of 20,000 Health Institutions] The total number of health agencies in the country has decreased with changes in administrative divisions and statistical standards. By the end of 2004, the number of national health institutions was 297,500, a decrease of 27,200 over 2000. Main reasons for the decrease of institutions: - The headquarters of the Drug Quarantine Bureau, the Frontier Health and Quarantine Bureau, the Family Planning Counseling Station and the high school and other medical institutions are successively under the management of other departments and are no longer included in the health institutions. - Due to the merger of townships and villages, the number of township hospitals was reduced by 7603 and the number of clinics by 34,600. By the end of 2004, there were 288,800 medical institutions nationwide. 134,800 non-profit medical institutions nationwide and 152,500 for-profit hospital institutions. Provincial Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Surveillance Center has completed institutional reform, prefectural and county-level institutional reform is gradually carried out. As of the end of 2004, there were 3,588 centers for disease control and prevention (epidemic prevention stations); 1,288 health supervision stations, and 83% of prefecture-level cities and 35% of counties and districts have set up health supervision stations. - It is estimated that there will be about 300,000 health institutions nationwide in 2005, little changes in hospitals, MCH institutions and disease prevention and control institutions, community health service agencies and health supervision agencies will continue to increase, and cracking down on “unlawful practice” will result in small-scale medical institutions In particular, fewer clinics.
