平乐地处荔江、漓江和茶江三江交汇处,地当要冲,交通便利,为桂东北的重镇。碑刻资料和地方志资料显示,其商业从明万历年间兴起,经过清前期的迅速恢复和发展,到嘉庆年间处于鼎盛时期。虽在咸丰兵燹中一度衰落,但同光年间有所恢复。乾隆、嘉庆和同治年间,在平乐经商的外地商人仅广东籍商号就有300家左右。平乐与周边城镇以及广东地区有着密切的经济联系,是桂东北地区农副产品出口与日用百货、食盐、海产品进口的中转站和集散中心,在桂东北商业经济交往中起到了重要的作用。
