To breed salt-tolerant wheat varieties, breeders from Australia collected 200 wheat varieties from Tamworth in New South Wales, which provide a wide range of genetic material. They conducted a seedling growth experiment in salty nutrient solutions. Studies in the United States that aim to irrigate seawater have shown that there is sufficient genetic variability in cereals and other crops that one can use to select and breed salt tolerant species. This study from the United States demonstrated that the control variety Caiifornian Mariout67 barley has higher salt tolerance.
