Based on Searle’s Intentionality Theory, this article explores the logic of argumentation of the propositions of the contracted translation theory and illustrates the role and limitation of empirical evidence in the study of the contracted translation. The dissertation points out that propositional translation studies are not intended to depict facts but to regulate or guide behavior. For such propositions, we should argue whether it is true or not, but whether it is reasonable or not. The justification of the theory of contractual translation must include two elements: the causal element and the value element. The former can be verified through empirical research, while the latter goes beyond the verification scope of empirical research. For empirical translation studies, empirical evidence makes sense, but at the same time there is a limit to what this means.
